There's even sort of an analogue to this in the oWoD, although I imagine this particular parallel is much less intended. The "Legend" background (not the power stat from Scion, but the Mage-venue background) made your happy little mage into a walking Node. He embodied a specific legend - Hercules or Robin Hood or Countess Bathory or someone like that - and he could generate Quintessence by simply acting in character with that legend, i.e. exhibiting impossible strength or selfless altruism or bathing in virgin's blood. That is, in a nutshell, what an Exaltation does - except, since you're not just embodying the Legend but actually making it up as you go along, everything you do gets you Essence. Leading people, or eating people, or stunting, or just managing to survive long enough to take a nap, or even just one more breath - Essence. That's what Exaltations do. That's what makes them the most dangerous weapon ever invented - they make and load their own ammunition and fire themselves at your enemies, and give you plausible deniability since they possess free will.
